How Hard is it to Find Inner Peace?

Peace and balance are often perceived as an unattainable dream-like state or a divine connection that only a few can obtain. People think that they have to retire to the mountains and meditate for years to achieve peace. On the contrary, anyone can be at peace just by being organized and making a few changes in their lifestyle. It’s a constant practice that guides your way of life and teaches you to be more calm, composed, and content with each passing day.

The path to peace (or should we say Inner Peace?) does implicate deep philosophies. But don’t confuse it with transforming yourself into a holy soul who walks around in saffron robes. It’s about finding inner happiness. Inner peace can be as simple as resting under the shade of a tree, or enjoying a simple moment, or it can be as hard as trying to prove yourselves to others throughout your life.

The Relevance of Inner Peace in Modern Times

Despite being an integral part of spiritual philosophies, inner peace and tranquility remain relevant in the modern context as well. Our lives have become too chaotic. We suppress our feelings due to peer pressure. We don’t speak our minds, and we often try to please others; a common behavior we exhibit at work and home. We make ‘friends’ we don’t like and often do not value people who truly deserve our time and attention.

Let me ask you this: When was the last time when you had a good dinner with all your family members and enjoyed the beauty of simple conversations?
You know the answer to that question.

We’ve made our lives too complicated and forgotten to enjoy little things in life, and that is definitely hampering our pursuit of peace. And though you may have different approaches in getting to your happy space, there are a few fundamental practices that govern the whole idea of finding inner peace.

Master the Art of Acceptance

Your path to inner peace goes through acceptance. You’ll have to learn to acknowledge things both from internal and external standpoints.
A classic example of such an issue is ‘differences in opinions,’ which most of us take quite seriously. We begin disliking that person or end up completely ignoring them. The same thing happens when we are criticized regarding our work or personality. While some of it might be positive, given by our well-wishers (mentors, friends, family members), the majority of criticism we receive is neither constructive nor well-meaning. Over time, we learn to suppress our emotions, and when we fail, it leads to an outburst.

Such reactions and their outcomes can be quite toxic for our soul and our well-being. You have to understand that challenges will always be there, and life will throw up surprises every now and then. Acknowledge their existence, accept their inevitability, and deal with these situations without getting emotional or worked up. Similarly, accept the people around you for who they are and remain unaffected by their opinions. It won’t be easy, but with proper training, it’s possible.

Learn to Let Go

Things that have happened in the past often deeply impact our soul. Detaching from a relationship or dealing with the loss of a loved one is not easy, and most of us find it hard to cope with such incidents. Strangely enough, pain often brings comfort to people who’ve gone through emotional and physical suffering. Such individuals often identify with these emotions, and it becomes even harder for them to let go of their past.
Now, many will say, ‘How can we let go of the things that’ve been a part of our lives for so long?’
My answer to that question is, “It’s not doing you any good. Living in the past will only prevent you from enjoying your present and future.”
The past is immutable. There’s no changing it. This means you’re left with only two choices: You can either accept it and move on or you live in the past and keep suffering. Letting it go helps you look forward, clearing your mind to cope with life and the more important events that are yet to come.

As I earlier said, inner peace is not an achievement; it’s a practice. You have to practice inner peace every day in each of your actions and emotions. Be strong, do not let unimportant people and emotions affect you, and keep yourself away from negativity. Slowly and steadily, you’ll find yourself inching closer to your pursuit of peace and happiness. Cheers to Life!

Why Spirituality or Spiritual Wellness is an Important Aspect of Your Existence? ‘Your well-being or health is not only the absence of disease or illness. Instead, it is the state of complete physical, social, mental, and spiritual well-being.’ This is the definition of health or well-being provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). Isn’t it enough to tell you the significance of spiritual well-being in your existence? If not, then let me convince you with some facts. Spirituality Takes You from Chaos to Calm Our hectic lives, filled with personal and work-related obligations, leave little scope for self-reflection. Regardless of where we are, we are always busy with something. We are either busy with thoughts or looking at our mobile screens. And we are often consumed by this madness and lose sight of the bigger picture. In all this hotchpotch, spiritual practices calm you so you can have a bird’s eye view of your life and actions and decide which way you should proceed. It gives you a chance to rediscover yourself and find your place in the grand scheme of things. Spirituality Enables You to Make Healthier Life Choices Following a certain spiritual practice, such as meditation and self-reflection, can show health benefits that go beyond typical treatment regimes. Such practices focus on healing the individual with kindness and compassion and avoiding unhealthy behaviors such as violent behavior, doing narcotic drugs, being unfaithful in relationships, etc. What Science and Scientists Say? There have already been many studies related to positive thinking and self-awareness (which are two of the many dimensions of spirituality) that suggest opting for a positive approach in life and living a life that contributes to both your and someone else’s well-being makes a person more spiritual. This improves your spiritual health and makes you more compassionate and kind towards others. Additionally, spirituality or spiritual health gives you the drive to live a life that satisfies you and the strength to face and overcome almost any situation. And spirituality can be an extremely powerful source of your inner strength. I can go on preaching for as long as I want, but I’m not here to bore you. Instead, I want you to take charge of your well-being and at least understand what it means to be spiritual and what it can do for you. Just start with being more compassionate and kind and accept the fact that your existence is only what you want it to be.

Spirituality 101: How to Practice It? Spirituality is an extensive concept with room for unlimited perspectives. To put it in simple words, spirituality is connecting with something greater than human beings with the hope of knowing the meaning and purpose of life. This is a shared universal human experience that has touched all of us. It is hard to put into words as it is more than worshipping or praying; it can be described as a transcendent experience that enables us to feel alive. For some, their sense of spirituality is established when they visit a temple or a church, while others say that they do not believe in any religion and connect to their spiritual self in their everyday lives. Being quite subjective in nature, there’s no specific way for everyone to practice spirituality. But there might be some ways or activities that can at least help you find your higher self. Here’s how you do it: Meditation Meditation is when we quiet our mind and start listening to our intuition. You don’t have to be an expert to attain the state of meditation. Meditation requires practice, which is subjective to each individual. Some are inherently good at it and can go into deep meditation within a couple of weeks, whereas others might require a longer time. Just take out 5 minutes every day and sit down in the meditation pose with your eyes closed. Try not to think about anything and only focus on your breathing. Also, do not strain your mind by trying to remove thoughts; if thoughts occur to you, just let them pass and do not engage. If you find it extremely hard, you can also seek assistance from professionals and try guided meditation. Live a Healthy Life Health is a state of equilibrium of mental, social, physical, and spiritual health. And you need to take utmost care of your body and mind so you can practice spirituality and attain a spiritual state. Try to listen to your body and see what it actually needs to remain healthy. And if you can, try to maintain a state where both your body and mind are functioning at peak levels. In addition, practice healthy behavior by trying to become a better person. Practice Gratitude There are times when your life seems amazing—everything goes according to plan, and you are having the time of your life. Despite how amazing things currently are in your life, there will also be times when things do not go as planned. And therefore, you need to be grateful for the pleasures that life has given you. You’ll see that your perspective will start to change, and tough times won’t be able to bother you anymore. Instead, you’ll realize that failure and challenges are shared human experiences that are only there to test your will. Meditation is about surrendering yourself to the life force. This is the place where you start living within the flow. And you lose control and let the higher powers take care of you.

Is Spirituality Different from Religion? Spirituality is often associated with religion, and these days, these terms are used interchangeably. However, this is not the way it is; instead, spirituality is diametrically opposite to religion. However, to differentiate between them, first, we should understand what both these phenomena are. Religion vs. Spirituality Religion is an institutionalized system where you can practice a set of taught religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices that lead you to God. The best example of religion is Abrahamic religions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. These are all highly organized and follow a set of dos and don’ts, instructing people on what and how they should worship God. Such an organized approach also creates exclusivity, where believers and non-believers are always made to stand against each other. In addition, religion focuses more on believing rather than experiencing. On the other hand, spirituality implies establishing a connection with a higher power that may or may not have a form. You can create a physical form of the power you want to worship or just don’t if you don’t want to. You don’t have to worship any higher power, and in fact, you don’t have to worship at all to find your true purpose in life and feel connected to nature, other human beings, and other sacred beings. The Blurred Line between Spirituality and Religion Despite the fundamental differences between spirituality and religion, the lines often get blurred because spirituality is quite subjective in nature, and even individuals from religious backgrounds find their own ways of being spiritual. And always keep in mind, no matter what any religious figure or book preaches, nothing is absolute, and this is especially true with spirituality. I’ve personally come across many individuals who are not religious but have a better understanding of spirituality than the religious ones. Secondly, spirituality always breaks from rules, codes of conduct, houses of worship, and rituals. This is more about referring to self and internalizing the feeling of the divine. You would not need any book to understand what’s good for you and others once you’ve had a spiritual experience. It generates a blessing for every sentient being on the planet without someone having to teach you how to do it, as it is said in Hinduism: “May everyone be truly happy. May everyone be free from ailments. May all be calm, and may none remain sad.”

The Dilemma of Being Practical vs. Being Moral “Shruti has been working as a PR Manager for quite some time. Her journey has been pretty smooth as well. But recently Shruti seems bothered by one of her colleagues. Her colleague is not being honest with her work, and she’s also too much involved in office politics. She has also been warned by the management a couple of times, but there’s not been any significant change. Her behavior has now started to affect others’ work, and as a manager, Shruti now feels obligated to complain about her actions to upper-level management. Shruti is puzzled as complaining about the actions of her colleague may cost her the job, but as a manager, it’s her responsibility as well.” What do you think? What should Shruti do now? The answer to these questions might be quite simple for many. Some will say that Shruti should control her emotions and fulfill her responsibility, while others would choose to give a warning to her colleague and carry on. The thing is, all of you should be more interested in the situation and how you reach a certain conclusion rather than answering to your impulse and answering right away. Here, the real question should be, ‘How do you choose when you either have to be ethical or moral?’ Let’s find out! The Concept of Morality Morality is a set of values that shape an individual’s sense of right and wrong. Many religions and exploratory systems often follow cosmic righteousness in any given situation that aims to do the best for everyone. In any case, being moral is usually doing the right thing and avoiding someone else’s loss. In a nutshell, morality is simply making the ideal choice in any situation. The Concept of Ethics Ethics are another set of values, different from morals, that apply in the real world and are more practical. Ethics are quite subjective in nature, and many individuals follow their set of ethics which they think is the right approach for them to live their life. However, contrary to morals, ethics do not always follow morality. For instance, Mafia in the US and Italy had their own code, i.e., Omerta. This was an oath of silence that every Mafia member took to save other members from the police. Similarly, many private associations also follow ethics/guidelines limited to their organization only. Now, what do you think? What should have been Shruti’s answer? As far as I’m concerned, I would advise Shruti to complain about her colleague’s actions to the management, as within the premises of the organization and as a manager, it is her moral and ethical duty to report any discrepancies that come under her purview.
