How to Say Goodbye to Negative Thoughts—Healthily and Effectively
Popular culture that often perpetuates negative thinking and dark humor, it’s easy to get lost in our heads and spiral into a chain of negative thoughts and toxic beliefs about yourself and your worth. When this happens, we often try to use brute force to push these thoughts out. However, this has a habit of backfiring on us and impacting our day-to-day lives, especially if we repress these thoughts and feelings for a long time. We end up losing sleep due to stress, saying no to exciting opportunities due to anxiety, or losing our motivation to work on our goals due to insecurity and hopelessness.
That’s why it’s important to inculcate positivity into your life and create healthy practices to deal with negativity. To help you out in this effort, I’ve outlined some of my own methods of dealing with moments of anxiety and negativity.
What You Can Do –
1. Rationalize Your Thoughts
When negative thoughts hit, don’t try to stop them in their tracks. Instead, ask yourself one question: “Is this really true?” Spend a little while rationalizing your thoughts and why you might be having them. Seek evidence for your troubling thoughts. You’ll realize that a lot of your negative thoughts are only perceptions that hold no basis in reality.
2. Get Creative and Mindful
Calm your mind when you feel yourself spiraling. Do something that makes you happy or something that’ll get your creative juices flowing, whether that’s drawing (even doodling), meditating, playing an instrument, or simply going for a walk. Such activities help limit the negativity in you and give you space to straighten out the tangles in your thoughts.
3. Change Your Tone
Bring positive words into your daily use. It might seem like a trivial point to make, but thinking things like “This is impossible” or “I hate this,” even if it’s in a lighthearted way, will subconsciously enforce that negative idea. Instead, use positive statements like “it’s difficult, but I’m up for the challenge.”
4. Improve Your Body Language
Slouching, hanging your head, frowning, and similar actions often point to a negative mindset as well as a lack of self-worth and confidence. Just like your words, your actions subconsciously reinforce the emotions within you. Sit up straight, smile more, and confidently make eye contact with others. The more positive you behave, the more positive you will feel.
5. Practice Gratefulness
We talk about gratefulness a lot in relation to positivity, and that’s because it really does work. It’s as simple as listing all the things you’re grateful for or happy about. Whether that’s something as small as not getting stuck in traffic to something as big as a person in your life who’s held you through difficult times. Getting it down on paper will give you hope and reasons to smile.
These are some practices that I personally follow and have always worked for me. Whenever negativity rears its ugly head, this helps me get back on track and in a better frame of mind. Do you use any of these methods or have other ones that you’ve found helpful? If yes, I’d love to hear from you. Who knows, you could help countless people deal with negative thoughts more successfully and guide them towards a more positive outlook. That would be nice, wouldn’t it?
